Prenatal care Augustine offers full scope prenatal care - no need to see a doctor too. We take care of healthy low-risk women, providing proper risk assessment, all lab tests, ultrasounds, and genetic screening as needed.
As soon as you find out you're pregnant, give us a call to establish care - we do fill up quickly.
Prenatal care is offered at our office in Wailuku, in your home, or on our mobile care bus monthly for the first 7 months. Then twice a month til the last month. Then weekly until you deliver.
We take special pride in offering "Village Prenatals" once a month where all our clients gather for a unique circle, hearing others' questions and participating in the village conversation about birth. Here Papas meet each other, keiki play together, and mamas build strong bonds of community! Anytime you need a private appointment it's available, but for the year you are pregnant and newly nursing, you also have an extended family in the same stage of life at Village Prenatals!
At each visit your midwife will take time answering any questions you have and share information about the stage of pregnancy you are in, as well as:
measure your belly's growth
listen to your baby's heartbeat
palpate your baby's position
assess your vitals
perform a urinalysis
Additionally, depending on the stage of pregnancy you are in, your midwives might also offer to:
show you how to determine your baby's position
share evidence-based research on tests and procedures
order an ultrasound
draw prenatal labs
teach you how to avoid a rectus diastasis
discuss informed consent/informed refusal of common prenatal tests
review your health history and your family history
request records of this or previous pregnancies from other providers
review your diet diary
consult on nutrition
refer you to other complimentary health care providers
risk-assess your pregnancy
We work in a team, so during your prenatal care you will have a chance to meet many midwifery students. Augustine believes very strongly in training more midwives and regularly takes traveling students from around the country. These students always practice under supervision with Augustine right there if needed, and clients of Hale Ho'olana always reserve the right to refuse student participation. However, student midwives are hard-working, compassionate, and dedicated members of the team who in many ways are what make midwifery care so special. They see and do the little things like fluffing a pillow, bringing a glass of water, entertaining siblings, and cleaning up. Most of our clients end up LOVING the students just as much as their midwives and feel proud that they participated in training more midwives. But, if at any point, you need a private appointment without students, you are invited to let Augustine know.
