Augustine offers full scope prenatal care - no need to see a doctor too. We take care of healthy low-risk women, providing proper risk assessment, all lab tests, ultrasounds and genetic screening as needed.
As soon as you find out you're pregnant, give us a call to establish care - we do fill up quickly.
Prenatal care is offered at our office in Makawao office, in your home, or on our mobile care bus monthly for the first 7 months, then twice a month til the last month, then weekly until you deliver.
We take special pride in offering 'Village Prenatals" one a month. All our clients gather for a special circle - you get to hear others' questions and participate in the village conversation about birth. Papas meet each other, keiki play together, and mamas build strong bonds of community! Anytime you need a private appointment, it is available, but for the year you are pregnant and newly nursing, you get an extended community of families in the same stage of life at Village Prenatals!
Labor & Birth
When you think you are in labor, you call us directly! We don't use a message service, we give our cell phone numbers, so you can reach us directly - we don't want a middle man involved in your care!
When active labor is established, we arrive at your house with a big tub of equipment and together with the birth kit we had you order, we create 3 portable trays that can go anywhere you go. Natural labor demands that we be mobile - you can birth anywhere in (or outside) your house that you desire!
When your baby is born, your baby comes right to you!
We love teaching papas to catch their babies, so dads can be as involved as they want to be, in the tub, cutting the cord and/or catching their babies if they want - don't worry we're right there if you need us or if papa changes his mind in the moment! We don't cut the cord until you're ready- usually waiting for the cord to stop pulsating and/or the placenta to be born or supporting moms in a lotus birth (never cutting the cord) if desired.
Your midwives are also lactation consultants - we can help you get off to the right start and will see you many times in the first couple weeks to help and answer any questions you have.
Less than 5% of the births we attend develop complications that can't be handed at home, but we are ready to effect transport to the hospital to get mom the surgical or pharmaceutical support she needs to stay safe and healthy. In the rare event that we transport you to the hospital, some part of your midwifery team will stay with you until your baby is in your arms and you are beginning breastfeeding!
Your midwifery team will see you in your home at 24 hours and 1 or 2 more times in the first week depending on your needs, then we will see you at 2, 4, 6 & 8 weeks at our office for well-baby checks as well as checks on how you're doing.
Unlike in medical/surgical care, At all your postpartum home and office visits your midwifery team takes care of both your baby and your health. When your baby is two months old, you can transfer care to a family practice doc, family nurse practitioner, naturopathic doctor or pediatrician to continue care and we will fax your baby's health care records wherever you direct us.
During your postpartum care, just like in pregnancy and labor, if at anytime we determine that you or your baby are high risk or develop risk factors, we will effect transport to the hospital or a care provider qualified to deal with the identified complication.
Your baby's safety is our top priority!
We will monitor your babies health through various fetal surveillance tests during the end of pregnancy and then by monitoring your baby's APGAR score, heart rate, respirations, temperature and pulse oximetry postpartum. Your whole midwifery team is certified by the American Academy of Pediatrics in Neonatal Resuscitation Protocol (NRP) and CPR for the professional rescuer. We carry various equipment to birth to assist baby in the transition from intra-uterine life to breathing air and don't hesitate to use it!
Less then 1% of births we attend end in babies who need extensive respiratory support, but we are prepared to effect transport to a respiratory therapy support team in hospital if needed.
